Friday 10th September - Initial Planning and Track Decision

Initial Planning and Track Decision

Today, as a group set ourselves a "group target" which was
"by the end of the lesson we would have our music track"

Going through various tracks was a very time consuming task and seeing as we had to decide as a group of four, we had to compromise and take other people's opinions in to consideration, but I think we worked well as a team to choose a suitable track for our project. We started having a discussion about what themes and genres we would like to work from we had "dance anthem", "pop", and "slow rock" which were the most popular genres we agreed on as a group. We mentioned as a group that if we choose a dance track we would have to choreograph a routine which would have to be a major part of our track, we would be quite a lot of pressure. Having discussed this however we decided as a group that we could include a routine/ section in this video, like most "pop" genre music videos include, for example "Katy Perry's - California Gurls" and "JLS's - Beat Again". After we had decided on a vague genre for our track we visited the website http://www.totallyunsigned.co.uk/ and browsed for suitable tracks that weren't copyrighted, in the "pop" genre page. We browsed the first few pages and played the 30 second track previews, some songs we agreed as a group straight away that they weren't suitable and as a track wasn't catchy, rememberable and instantly likable. However, some tracks caused differential opinion in the group, therefore we, through process of elimination got down to 5 suitable tracks. We then listened to the whole song and made our opinions on them. Luckily we all agreed after a while that one specific song stood out and had good "story" lyrics (which was one of the things we wanted, as a group, because we thought that, to a music video it is essential to have something happening so the audience is engaged and interested about the story, and therefore, the song).

After we had chosen our track, we had an initial brainstorm of ideas in a form of a mind map which were our first thoughts on the track as a group, so themes, ideas, plots etc. We came up with certain themes like "isolation", "secrecy", "mystery" and then we had plot ideas like "broken relationship", "fear/phobia of love/attraction/relationship". Then Sophie mentioned "mannequins" which we all thought was a great idea because she, herself is slightly afraid of mannequins, therefore can input various ideas and truths about her "experience". We had ideas about mannequins coming alive or designing the character's "perfect mannequin", due to the link in the song about "designing" and "making", almost like vodoo dolls. I thought the song was about a character who was quite unsure and insecure about herself and what she wants in life or in a relationship.

Unfortunately, this song wasn't recognised as a well known track on http://www.lyrics.com/ or http://www.google.co.uk/ therefore we had to listen to the song several times and I was in charge of writing on Microsoft Word what everyone heard. We worked together as a team to scribe these lyrics as fast as we could. This was a frustrating task and very time consuming, however it was essential that we had the lyrics, not only for Sophie so she can sing/mime this song correctly but also idea wise, as a group. Lyrics are a huge part of a song and determine what the song is about, therefore our filming, mise en scene, camera angles and ideas have to be appropriate to what the artist is singing.

Our chosen track is called "Not Made For This" - Anna Neale (artwork below)
